Flexi units for horticulture

Hi!

I am going to go thru a whole bunch of potential resources that Wendy has found and some that I have found and put the links into my blog with some ideas about how they can be used for learning activities…

The following ones can be used for unit 4 , part of this unit involves small engine maintenance:

The first one is quite funny and mostly involves what not to do when operating a lawnmower.I think this would make a good activity where we ask the learner to view the youtube and list three things that the dudes did correctly.

Answers:

Pre-operation safety check

Recognizing need for repairs

Team lifting or handling when taking mower to shed

Another suitable youtube resource is how to use a line trimmer. This is quite good because the operator does a lot of things right but at the same time she did a few things incorrectly, so point out 5 things she did correctly and 5 things that would not be deemed correct in terms of the way we teach unit 1667.

Ok so you get my drift so now i will continue to go thru the suggestions and extract ones we can use:

Unit4This is a good you tube regarding lawn mower maintenance and how to store a mower if you will not be using it for a few months, mostly relevant for areas that get high snowfall or prolonged periods where grass growth is minimal.

Personal protective equipment for chainsaw useThis you tube explains what PPE to wear when taking to the woods wid ya saw.

Chainsaw maintenanceThis is a site that has some good info on chainsaw maintenance-no moving pictures, just good ol written information.

Chainsaw use and maintenanceMore written info.

More chainsaw maintenanceAnd more written info.

Bird making chainsaw soundThis a cool you tube explaining the incredible Lyre bird from Australia. Not sure how we can make it a learning activity but it is just cool!

What personal protective equipment is lacking in this youtube video?Hmmm, this guy needs some guidance.

How to fix a fuel line in a chainsaw in 6 minutesBonus information.

Gus shows us how to use a depth gauge during Otago Polytechnic short course on chainsaw safety.

Gus explains why the anti vibration devices are important and how to recognize when these rubber gromets need replacing.

Gus tells us how important cutters are in terms of their position on the chain and especially where the chainsaw chain chains together.

Gus demonstrates the correct file angle to be used when sharpening a chainsaw chain….chain chain chain, chain of fools.

Gus shows how you can avoid cutting yourself when tensioning the chain.

Flexible Friday

I love my flexi fridays!Although this whole week felt as if it should have been a friday, everyone around me seems a bit burnt out and longing for the three week student break;including the students of course.I have dodged the lurgy going around(so far)and always feel abit skittish when surrounded by sneezing, wheezing trojans who power on with their ailments. Just a quick hello to any friends or family members who I blog bragged to;although no one has more joy reading about me than me.HI! OK so today is the shortest day of the year and I am hoping for snow…I have this morning to work on flexible units and then I teach machinery this afternoon although i will liase with my students soon and see if they want to proceed in the cold or reschedule after the break. We have high cloud and a bitter wind. Back to the meat of the matter!Today I will try to finish loading the mini power points which are now all labelled onto our wiki page, and continue working on activities for units 43 and 6916.Another exciting thing will be to see how far sunshine got with editing Jerry’ chainsaw video. You can see an example onbliptv of how the little video chainsawmercials will look!See ya next time!

Flexible Friday

Ok so what wil we do today eh?I usually start with the weather which is quite nice today relative to the frosty mornings we have had over the last week in Dunedin. It always intrigues me to drive down our hill and see the myriad of techniques that people use to de-frost their windscreens?!

Today I hope to continue work with Sunshine on editing the video of Jerry, continue to label mini versions of power point pictures, and hopefully finish an activity for the chainsaw unit and put it on the wiki resource library.

I will also identify what has not been covered and perhaps re-connect with Muarice at STIHL and see if he can assist with any areas we are lacking in terms of resources.

Flexible Frosty Friday

OK so woke up to snow in Opoho but nothing will deter me from delivery of flexible units. It is a quiet day in room F204,Fblock….the wizards behind the OZ.

Yah so Leigh ,Sunshine and I are spending the day doin stuff:

Sunshine and I are going thru the video that we shot of Jerry Lynch(arboriculture lecturer at Otago Polytechnic).Hey speaking of which for more info on the Arboriculture course visit our website!

So what else will we try to achieve?Oh yah I had Leigh show me how to put a warning label on the units on wiki which are in progress so dat is done and after lunch i will try to change the images on the title pages of the wikis,do some labelling on the mini power points for chainsaw safety and work with Sunshine on editing the video…which is proving to be really interesting. The process is quite involved and we are lucky to have such amazing people with amazing skills.Ovah and out.
